COMPASS ROSE STAFF

APRIL GASTON

BA in Anthropology (Certificate in Museum Studies)
California State University, Chico

MA in Early Childhood Education

San Francisco State University

April grew up exploring the magical outdoor world of Northern California. A childhood of freedom – freedom to create and explore the natural world and the endless possibilities of her imagination – inspired her to bring the same opportunities to children of the Bay Area. After receiving a degree in Anthropology and Museum Studies from CSU Chico, she returned to Marin to work at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Here, she took part in developing camps for ages three through eight as well as a creative-enrichment preschool program. April now works at One Fifty Parker Avenue School in San Francisco as a teacher in the four-year-old program.

April views children as competent makers of meaning and teachers as learners and collaborators. She believes in respecting and honoring their unique perspectives – supporting them with opportunities, conversations and materials to take risks, share their feelings, explore, and deepen their thinking as they make sense of the world around them.

Compass Rose was established in 2015 by dear friends and business partners, April and Vanessa. As of March 2016, Vanessa has moved on from her role to pursue her passion for education at a new venue, while April continues to manage the business, as well as direct and teach Compass Rose camps.

Teresa is thrilled to be teaming up with April this summer in helping Compass Rose campers foster a love for exploration of the natural world. A Bay Area native and outdoor enthusiast, she feels that fun, experiential, hands-on exploration is essential for children to learn and grow.  Fresh air is always the answer is her mantra. She shares her love for the outdoors with her fourth grade students at a local elementary school. When she isn't teaching, Teresa can be found mountain biking across Marin's many beautiful trails or hiking with her four-legged companion.  She is looking forward to sharing her passion for outdoor exploration with all campers!
